America’s Cup Meets Napa Valley: 6 Stand Out Wines

IMG_5457The taste of victory was ever so sweet today aboard the SS Jeremiah O’Brien located at San Francisco’s, Pier 45. 50 Napa Valley Vintners poured their wines for an exclusive trade and media tasting during Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Finals racing aboard the WWII battleship located at Fisherman’s Wharf, the city’s most popular tourist spot. The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is one of two remaining fully functional Liberty ships of the 2,710 built and launched during WWII. The O’Brien has the distinction of being the last unaltered Liberty ship and remains historically accurate.

Monique Soltani Wine Oh TVYou might find yourself wondering what wine and ships have to do with one another? Well, the Napa Valley is the Official Wine Region of the 34th America’s Cup, yachting’s most prestigious contest. I don’t know anything about ships, racing, or water sports but I do know a little something about vino. It was a great thrill for me to be invited to spend a day on the Bay doing what I do best wine-ing. What made the event even more meaningful for me was that it was aboard a World War II ship. My Grandpa was in the Navy and served in both WWII and Korea. I think if he were alive today he would have gotten a real kick out of this one.

I didn’t get a chance to taste all the wines from all 50 Napa Valley Vintners or I would have been a sinking ship (talk about (wo)man over board). However, every wine I did taste was a fantastic representation of the class and character that comes from one of the best wine regions in the world.

6 Stand Out Napa Valley Wines

Blackbird Vineyards 2012 ARRIVISTE Napa Valley Proprietary Rosé: Winemaker, Aaron Pott does it again with this sensational rosé just in time for summer! Here in San Francisco our “summers” don’t start till September, so you still have a few more months to make the most of this porch pounder. $25

2009 Buoncristiani O.P.C.: Four Napa Valley born and bread brothers have come together to handcraft ultra premium Napa Valley wines. This band of brothers continues to keep it all in the family with the O.P.C. AKA “Ol’ Pa’s Cuvée”, which is named after their Grandpa. $50

Crosby Roamann 2010 Crosby’s Reserve: This limited production beautiful blend of Merlot from Oak Knoll and Cabernet Sauvignon from Mt. Veeder would make even Bing Crosby sing in the rain. With only 77 cases produced this is a special occasion wine that you will want to lay down for atleast 8 years. $135.00

Round Pond Estate 2012 Sauvignon Blanc: You can’t go wrong with Round Pound. With hints of honey dew, lemon and kiwi this Sauv Blanc is equally as pretty as the views from their Rutherford property. $24

2012 Grenache Blanc Priest Ranch White Wine: This unique white wine comes from Napa Valley’s Somerston Estate and showcases the properties diversity. Winemaker Craig Becker makes it a point to bring a sense of place into all of his wines. $20

Conn Creek ANTHOLOGY 2009: What do you get when you take the five classic Bordeaux grape varieties and blend them together at a legendary Napa Valley winery? How about juicy dark berries filled with structure that linger a lifetime in your mouth. All this for less than 60 bucks! With that in mind, you can’t beat this one of a kind classic red wine. $55
